Passion for Polo will be the highest on the world’s highest Polo ground.

Shandur invites the visitors to experience a traditional polo tournament between the teams of Chitral and Gilgit during the 2nd week of July. The Tournament is held on Shandur Pass, the highest Polo ground in the world at 3700m. The festival will also include folk music and dancing and camping villages set up.


The first time a polo tournament took place at the Shandur Pass, was in 1936. A British Agent Major Cobb, who was fond of playing polo under a full moon, had the polo ground near Shandur, named, “Moony Polo Ground”.

The most exciting polo tournament of the entire Northern Pakistan, is played on the top of Shandur Pass, around 3700m above sea level. It is a place unique and exotic in itself, surrounded by the some of most spectacular mountain scenery in the world. The event makes the annual rivalry between the polo teams of Gilgit and Chitral. The polo tournament has added some attractions for the visitors: trout fishing at the nearby streams and lake and a festival of folk dances and music of the Northern Areas.


Active Tours Pakistan advises to all valued clients to be there one day in advance to enjoy the wild/free style polo tournament. Activities of Shandur includes dances and music performances by different groups, trout fishing, mountaineering, trekking, hiking and of course horse riding, crystal clear lakes, snow covered mountains, alpine flowers and vast stretches of green grass, are added attractions.


The Shandur Pass lies almost midway between Gilgit & Chitral on a jeep-road, traveling on which, is adventurous to say the least. The distance from either side is 170km. One can get to Gilgit & Chitral by Pakistan International’s daily F27 Fokker planes from Islamabad. There are daily two flights, subject to good weather conditioned. Visitors planning to go by air must expect adjustment of minimum 2 days in their itineraries just in case the weather does not permit flights to operate.

Access to Gilgit by road from Islamabad, on the Karakorum Highway (The Silk Route) visitors can stop at half way for overnight stay along the might Indus, at Besham.

Day 1Arrive in Islamabad, Pakistan

Arrival at Islamabad international airport, you will be received by the team of Active Tours Pakistan and after welcome reception, transfer to centrally located hotel in Islamabad. Half day, there will be city tour of Islamabad. Welcome dinner will be served at local traditional restaurant and overnight stay will be at hotel.

Day 2Islamabad/Rawalpindi – Peshawar:

Following breakfast, we will drive to Peshawar. En route we will visit Taxila Museum and truck art painting. We will reach Peshawar around late noon and after check-in at hotel, we will visit local market. Dinner will be at local restaurant and overnight stay at hotel.

Day 3Peshawar City tour

Full day city tour of Peshawar include, Peshawar markets, story tellers bazaar, Mohabat Khan Mosque, Peshawar Museum, qisa khani bazaar and Chowk Yadgar. Dinner & overnight stay will be at hotel.

Day 4Peshawar - Takh-e-Bhai - Swat Valley

We will leave peshawar in the morning to Swat Valley. En route, we will visit Takht-e-bhai Monetary. Later we will continue our drive to Mingor, Swat via Malakand Pass. Dinner & Check-in at hotel.

Day 5Swat Valley Tour

Today, we will explore swat valley. Our visit will start from Saidu Sharif by visiting Swat Museum, Butkara, white palace and around noon we will visit Mingor bazaar for walk. Evening we will get back to hotel for dinner & overnight stay.

Day 6Swat Valley - Kalash Valley, Chitral

Following breakfast, we will drive to Kalash Valley via lowari pass or tunnel. En route we will stop for photography, tea and toilet break. We will reach Kalash around late noon and remaining time, we will walk in Bamburat Village and meet local people.

Day 7Kalash Valley Tour

Today we will explore Kalash Valley and the most interesting thing here will be meeting with local people and you will be amazed by knowing their history, culture and traditions. As this is only part of Pakistan that someone can see the locals in very traditional way of life. Dinner and overnight stay will be at hotel.

Day 8Kalash - Chitral - Mastuj (upper Chitral)

Following breakfast, we will drive to Chitral town, we will visit local market, shahi mosque and fort (if permit) and then we will continue our drive to upper chitral through Boni. We will make several photo stops and we will reach hotel around evening. Dinner & overnight stay will be at hotel.

Day 9Mastuj - Shandur Pass - Phandar

This is an interesting day, as we are crossing Shandur Pass where world world highest polo ground is locating. We will stop for couple of hours on top and enjoy the nature. After visit, we will drive to Phandar and rest of time we will visit a village. Dinner will be served and overnight stay at hotel.

Day 10Phandar - Gilgit

We will drive to Gilgit, En route we will make several stops as the valley is called Ghizer and you will be amazed by the scenery. We will reach gilgit around late noon and will have Gilgit Town visit include Karga Buddha, local bazaar and suspension bridge. Dinner & overnight stay will be at hotel.

Day 11Gilgit - Karimabad Hunza

We will drive to Karimabad Hunza. After check-in at hotel we will have local visits includes Baltit Fort, local bazaar, Water channel walk and sunset photography. Dinner & overnight stay will be at hotel.

Day 12Karimabad - Khunjerab Pass - Gilgit

Full day excursion to Khunejrab Pass. En route we will stop at rock carving, atabad lake, suspension bridge, viewpoint of passu peaks, glacier and cones. We will reach Gilgit around evening, dinner & overnight stay will be at hotel.

Day 13Gilgit - Babusar Pass - Naran

Following breakfast we will drive to Naran via babusar pass. En route we will stop at junction point, Nanga parbat view point, rock carving and lalusar lake. Dinner & overnight stay will be at hotel.

Day 14Naran - Saiful Maluk Lake - Islamabad

Morning we will visit Siaful Maluk Lake by 4×4 jeeps. Around noon we will leave Naran and drive to Islamabad. En route we will stop at several photo point and we will reach Islamabad around evening, dinner and overnight stay will be at hotel.

Day 15Islamabad - Fly back

You will be transfer to Islamabad International airport. From peace and serenity of Hunza to the hustle and bustles of “modern” trends, you say Khuda Hafiz, the typical farewell, as you depart after a tour into Shangri-La. End of the tour.
